The Carlebach family fled to America to escape the Holocaust, and Carlebach grew up in New York City, spending much of his time around Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson. Reb Shlomo attended rabbinical school at Yeshiva University, where he studied with some of the most prominent rabbis.

Reb Shlomo was ordained as a rabbi in 1951 by Rabbi Aharon Kotler and started to become famous for his work as a composer, musician, and now Rabbi. He became known for his soulful melodies and popular songs, which often had religious or spiritual themes.
